SAARC–UNICEF Regional Meeting on Reducing Anaemia Among Women and Adolescent Girls in South Asia

Colombo, Sri Lanka

9–11 July 2025

Opening Day at the SAARC–UNICEF Regional Meeting on Reducing Anaemia

A proud moment sitting at the Maldives table as the regional consultation began in Colombo. The event brought together country delegations, experts, and development partners to accelerate action on anaemia reduction across South Asia.

Maldives Delegation at the SAARC Regional Anaemia Conference

Our delegation included representatives from UNICEF Maldives, the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the Ministry of Social and Family Development, and three medical doctors — including a paediatrician and two gynaecologists. It was an honour to be part of this multidisciplinary team representing the Maldives in a regional effort to strengthen anaemia prevention for women and adolescent girls across South Asia.

Marketplace of Innovations – Day 2

An interactive space showcasing tools, strategies, and country experiences in anaemia prevention and treatment. A valuable opportunity to learn, connect, and exchange practical ideas across the region.

Day 3 - Country Presentation

I had the honour of representing the Maldives country actions under the title:
“System Readiness, Gaps, and Prioritised Actions for a Multisectoral Approach to Anaemia Reduction.”

The presentation shared national priorities — including improvements in data systems, adolescent supplementation, thalassaemia screening, school health, and coordinated governance — all aimed at accelerating progress through existing health platforms.

The three-day event brought together policymakers, technical experts, and development partners from across South Asia. It concluded with a regional Call to Action and country-level commitments to meet the 2030 anaemia reduction targets.
